Have you ever calculated how much you spend each year on subscription services like Audible or other streaming platforms? And here's the kicker: even after you've paid for an audiobook, you don't truly own that file. The moment a platform changes its terms, drops a licensing deal, or you cancel your membership, your entire library can vanish overnight.
If you're an avid audio learner and already running a Home Server with Docker, today we're reclaiming full Data Ownership of your media library with Audiobookshelf.
Audiobookshelf is an open-source, self-hosted media server purpose-built for managing and streaming audiobooks, podcasts, and eBooks. It's the go-to choice in the self-hosting community as a complete, no-strings-attached Audible replacement.

### Why Audiobookshelf Is in a League of Its Own
If you've ever tried using Plex or Jellyfin to listen to audiobooks, you've probably hit the wall: those platforms weren't designed with audiobooks in mind. Think imprecise playback position tracking, no chapter management, and a clunky UX. Audiobookshelf was built for this exact use case:
* Premium Mobile Apps (iOS & Android): Official apps with smooth online streaming and, critically, 100% offline download support so you can listen on the go without a connection.
* Real-Time Progress Sync: Start listening in your browser on desktop, then pick up right where you left off on your phone during a workout. The system syncs your exact playback position automatically.
* Smart Metadata & Chapter Management: Automatically pulls cover art, author, narrator, and chapter data from Open Library or directly from M4B/MP3 files to keep your library organized.
* Multi-User Support: Create separate accounts for family members. Each user gets their own independent playback positions, bookmarks, and listening history.

### Preparing Your Directory Structure
Before installing, create the folder structure for your audiobooks, podcasts, and Audiobookshelf system data on your Home Server:
# Create the main Audiobookshelf directory structure
mkdir -p ~/homeserver/audiobookshelf/{audiobooks,podcasts,config,metadata}
# Navigate into the working directory
cd ~/homeserver/audiobookshelf
Tip: For large audiobook files, consider pointing the audiobooks folder to your primary hard drive or main storage volume for optimal read performance.
